Definition

An Appliance Server is a system designed to perform a specific task often using minimal system resources. These devices are usually designed both physically and functionally to appear to the user not as a server, but instead as a proprietary device. The OS is usually hidden or de-emphasized, and the application runs without much user intervention or maintenance.

Operating systems used for these devices are often basic Linux kernels or the embedded version of Microsoft Operating systems. Typical functions of appliance server are security, connectivity, monitoring, and file serving.
